I selected classic materials for a Samic-inspired hunting knife; reindeer antler and hide matched with a large blade. I entered the knife in the Ludvika Show in 2019 and took home a second prize in the “Half Horn” class.

The Spider

Samic hunting knife with engraved reindeer horn handle, pattern forged carbon steel blade, semi-tanned reindeer hide and engraved reindeer horn sheath. 29 cm. long.

JSC Knife #262(aR) - The Spider

I was fortunate to be presented with the opportunity to buy a special forged blade made by Mattias Styrfors and Johnny Walker. The unique pattern, a spider in two sizes forged into two other patterns, became the inspiration for the knife titled the Spider. 

Since the blade is rather large the sheath had to be made from a high-quality piece of masur birch and reindeer horn. Locating suitable pieces of white reindeer horn that were also large enough to match the size of the blade–like the spider net that was made by a single piece of reindeer horn—proved quite challenging, simply because those dimensions are rare to find. 

Inside the handle through the spider holes you can see pieces of reindeer horn with engravings. On top of the sheath you see the belt shoving the initials, knife number and month/year of production.

The Big Reindeer

An elegant selection of materials has come together beautifully for this Samic-inspired hunting knife. The materials—reindeer antler and hide—helped facilitate the creation of a fine engraving design that merges the clean look of untouched bone with the complexity of detailed handwork.

JSC Knife #328(e) - The Big Reindeer

The simple cream and brown color scheme complements the repeated engraving pattern and expresses a unique contrast to the exquisitely forged carbon steel knife blade. The untouched areas of the reindeer antler provide an almost startling contrast to the heavily engraved sections that are rich in detail.

The knife was selected to participate in the Swedish Ludvika Show hosted in 2018.

Elegant Reindeer

Sometimes simply going though the workshop and sorting supplies will reveal the perfect design idea for a custom knife, which was the case with the “Elegant Reindeer” hunting knife that won 2nd prize in the Open Class at Knivtræf I Nord, 2017.

JSC Knife #308(a) - Elegant Reindeer

I had discovered a piece of reindeer horn plus reindeer hide and quickly settled on a hunting knife with a distinct Samic design. The horn was split and glued so delicately that it was almost impossible to spot the connection; the subsequent engraving would hide the assembly line. The simple stainless steel blade combined with rare reindeer materials create the perfect backdrop for unique artistry.

Certain limitations apply when working with natural and rare materials like horn: it’s difficult to correct errors, and you cannot bend or stretch the horn into a new shape. You must simply work with what is in front of you and allow the materials to reveal the ultimate shape.
